I can highly recommend the following reference for identifying Australian dragonflies (damselflies and true dragonflies):

Theischinger, G. & J. Hawking (2006). The Complete Field Guide to Dragonflies of Australia (CSIRO Publishing, Collingwood).

Good to hear that Glenn is compiling more information to publish. Also agree with Simon that many dragonfly and damselfly species appear to be declining and are in need of attention from conservation authorities.

Hi Simon. I recall ECA member Glenn Hoye, well known for his expertise on bats, is also an authoriy on dragonflies. I recall chatting to him about a trip to Qld he had recently came back from photographing some species for a book he was preparing.

As you all should know (lol) the damsefly on the cover of the latest ECA NSW Newsletter is a Pseudagrion microcephalum or Blue River Damsel. For a starter's guide to Dragonflies, we've been slowly building a website over the last three years called Vic Dragonflies http://www.ecology-solutions.com.au/vic_dragonflies/. It doesn't contain many of the NSW species but it will be getting a face lift in the forseeable future and become a broader resource, with the chance for anyone 'over the border' to contribute.

It's about time we took these beasts more seriously. Many are in serious decline and hardly known.
