Thanks All - Ross was one of my lecturers at SCU, so I'll give him a shout!

Many thanks for all of the responses :o)

I'm the same as Deryk. I'd recommend a chat to Ross Goldingay at Southern Cross Uni at Lismore, who is the RTA's glider expert on the north coast.

A Google search on Glider Poles will throw up several studies, including some of the RTA ones. Rope bridges is also a practical alternative. Ive recommended the installation of glider poles for a project on the South Coast based on the theory that, if you adopt the mindset of a glider, if the "pole" is designed as a dead stag, the animal should not have any problems using it.

Hi Kath,

Glider poles and overhead rope ladders have been installed along the Hume Highway between Tarcutta and Albury as part of the Hume Highway Duplication project.

The person who has been advising the RTA about the use of these measures is Dr Rodney van der Ree of the University of Melbourne. Rodney's email address is rvdr@unimelb.edu.au.

I don't know how successful these have been, but their uses are being monitored as part of a research project, with the help of trigger sensor cameras. There's also been quite a lot of tagging and radio telemetry of squirrel gliders along this section of the highway over the last 3 years (conducted by Rodney's research group), to assist in the study of glider movements.

A quick question for people out there...

Has anyone had much experience with the installation of glider poles as a mitigation measure? Is it successful? Can anyone recommend any published literature to support their use? Any projects that have seen them used?

Additionally, can anyone recommend any experts in their installation?

Any information would be much appreciated - feel free to email me at kathryn_chesnut@urscorp.com

Thanks!!
