This morning I received my renewal form for Workers Compensation cover from GIO. I noticed that there was a “Dust Diseases levy” in the premium, so I phoned GIO to discuss the applicability of the levy to our profession. The person I spoke to explained that every employer in NSW by law has to pay this levy. Has anybody else been told this?

The levy isn’t that large, it’s only about 5% of the total value of the premium, but the GIO person I spoke to said that the amount one pays is based on their risk assessment of employees in your business contracting a dust-related disease. She couldn’t tell me how this is done for ecological consultants.

Dear All,

The ECA has been approached by an insurance broker for advice regarding the upper limits for Professional Indemnity (PI) required of ecological consultants. I guess that some/most of our members are insured for up to $10 million. However, the broker said he had heard that some tenders require up to $20 million cover for the advertised environmental consultancy work.

I don’t know what type of “environmental” consultancy work is being referred to by the broker. There has been only one instance where $20 million cover was required for ecological consultancy work that I have been involved in (an international airport), but to give an informed answer to the broker I would like to receive feedback from others. Are you finding that $10 million PI cover is sufficient for your operations, or are (potential) clients starting to ask for more?

I have to second Bruce's comment. I couldnt afford $10M cover if not for Envirosure. My previous broker wouldnt even give me a price for $10M. I only had $1M till Envirosure. I pay about the same price for 10x the cover.

hello all I just change to Envirosure for PI and PL and the cover is better no pollution exclusion under the PI and the premiums were much much cheaper I saved almost 4 grand compared to going through AON (CGU). I recommend giving them a call for a comparison.

Hi Rebecca, I've never heard of such an exclusion and I specify setting harp traps and digging pitfall traps to my insurer given they are probably the only hazard to the public apart from slipping on my tiled front steps. I'd be seeking a better deal from other insurers. I'm with QBE Commercial and I only pay $605 for $10M cover.

Rebecca Hayes asked:

I have an enquiry regarding public liability insurance.  I recently took out a new policy with AAMI, and notice that under the Environmental Consultant classification, there is an exclusion for 'manual work' conducted away from the office (or listed premises).  I phoned AAMI for further information regarding 'manual work' to find that 'manual work' would include collecting plant samples, using a spotlight etc.  I then asked if I could have the policy changed so that I am covered for such work (not that collecting plant samples is normally a high risk occupation), to be told that they were not able to remove that exclusion from the Environmental Consultant classification.  There was no other classification that seemed appropriate for my work.  It would seem to be a fairly useless policy if it only covers office activities.

Is this an exclusion that people live with, or does nobody use AAMI for public liability?

Rebecca,

You need to contact Anthony Saunders of Envirosure. Envirosure brokers a special deal between ECA members & Lloyds of London with respect to insurance cover. Anthony is a Non-practising Member of the ECA and his contact details are found in the member contact list on this website.

I've never been insured by AAMI, but based on what you have said, it does seem ineffectual. I've been insured by CGU in the past, but Envirosure can organise higher and more effective cover for pretty much the same premium.
