Hi Stephen,

Ray Williams and a team from our firm have successfully trapped Southern Brown Bandicoots in both December and February at a site in Duffys Forest. Two individuals were captured - an adult male and an immature female - both were recaptured on subsequent nights, the male more than once.

The traplines included both 'B' type Elliotts and cage traps and a relatively large number of traps were required to achieve this result - approximately 300 trap-nights were involved for each trapping session.

So it is possible to capture the SBB at that time - hope this helps!

I have a large field project planned for early December and an academic colleague suggested that I may have difficulty trapping Southern Brown Bandicoots at that time, if they are present on the site. His comment was based on a paper [Barnett et al. 1976. Australian Zoologist. 19: 23-34] which showed that over a 5.5 year period of trapping at a site in northern NSW, the Northern Brown Bandicoot (as opposed to its southern counterpart) was never trapped in November, December and January.

Does any one know if the same applies to Southern Brown Bandicoots?
